Public-private proposal for business hub
The needs
Charlotte's Merchandise Mart was seeking a new home; Charlotte's economic boom had largely passed by the Wilkinson Boulevard region of far-western Mecklenburg County.
Our contributions
Team members developed a public-private plan for sparking growth in western Mecklenburg County. The plan envisioned bringing an important business magnet to the challenged Wilkinson Boulevard corridor while leveraging growing public interest in environmental protection.
Catawba River Center would transform a portion of 150 acres of public land on upper Lake Wylie near I-85 into a thriving business center while providing funds to create a lakefront nature preserve and environmental study center.
The plan included details on the need for a new Merchandise Market site, the impact its 240 shows a year could have on the dormant Wilkinson Boulevard corridor, and the potential benefits of the adjacent environmental-study center to Charlotte's image.
