Get legislative OK for business district

The needs

The fast-growing business district around UNC Charlotte lacked a single entity with funding and paid staff to promote the area and lobby for its needs.

Our contributions

Our experts spent two years working with business, neighborhood and city leaders to gain approval of North Carolina's first municipal service district in a suburban community.

The legislature created these tax districts primarily to fund economic-development activities for town and city central business districts. One of our team members worked with legislators to expand the MSD enabling legislation to allow its use by University City. She also worked with city staff and the Charlotte City Council to win necessary local authorization.

These pioneering efforts for University City have provided crucial funds and leadership to develop growth guides for the core business area and University Research Park; lobbying efforts for a light-rail transit line; and marketing tools including websites, advertising and e-newsletters.
